Of particular interest of the journal is subject didaktik within the aforementioned fields. The presenters of this paper have recently taken position as editors of the journal and are interested in Nordidactica’s development over time. The aim of this paper is to present a bibliometric analysis of the journal. Bibliometrics is a statistical method for analyzing bibliographic data, particularly suitable for handling large datasets (Donthuet al., 2021; Petticrew & Roberts, 2006). Humanities and social science research is not as well-indexed as medicine and the natural sciences, rendering the usual bibliometric analytical tools, such as Gephi, Leximancer, VOSviewer and the like unfit for our purposes (Kemeç & Altınay, 2023; Mongeon, 2016; Lasda Bergman, 2012). We will instead use Bifrost (https://bifrost.kau.se), an analytical tool for analyzing bibliometric data from the Swedish databases DiVA (http://diva-portal.org/) and SwePub (https://swepub.kb.se). Since 2011, 330 different scholars (co-authors included) from 12 countries have authored 319 articles (reviews and research articles) in Nordidactica. This will then be our material, gathered and analyzed using Bifrost, to explore trends of research historically and today in the journal. This will, for example, include an analysis of keywords, scholars, subjects, materials and methods used in the published articles. To conclude, we will discuss the implications of the results, and possible develompents of the journal for the future. This will be of interest to the journal’s readers, authors, well as to scholars in the field of subject didactics. How does its particular epistemological and methodological perspective illuminate policy and governance in a critical manner beyond somewhat narrower, descriptive interrogations? What are the potential extensions and elaborations of the approach? Our ambition is to discuss what we regard as the characteristics of the WPR approach in relation to other ways of doing critical policy studies - its affordances but also any drawbacks, as well as to consider the potential for the approach in the future. Our discussion is informed both by our shared feminist position and by our locations within post-structuralism, where Malin is a longstanding WPR researcher, while Rosalind is drawn more toward the end of the spectrum of post-structuralism that builds links with structuralism and constructivism. Part of this lies in ESE's potential to foster action competence (AC) among learners. To capture this potential, ESE should be informed by feedback from adequate assessment instruments. The most common type is self-assessment scales, enabling large-scale statistical analyses. Drawing on theories of social change and democracy, we argue that self-assessment scales should: (a) be grounded in, and capable of assessing, AC for both individually driven and systemically oriented actions for social change; (b) distinguish between individual and collective AC; and (c) be based on a solid theoretical foundation regarding what supports and hinders actions for social change. Through a systematic review we identify validated scales assessing AC for sustainability and environmentally friendly actions, pinpoint gaps in terms of the a, b, and c listed above, and discuss ways to reduce these gaps through avenues for further instrument development and research. These holistic practices, which include meditation, yoga, sacred dance, and other creative forms of expression, integrate influences from Eastern traditions, folk religiosity including New Age practices, and secular approaches to wellbeing. Rather than existing as peripheral or fringe phenomena, these innovative practices have been woven into daily church life, serving not only as vehicles for spiritual progress but as expressions of holistic care and community building. The article argues that these practices are part of an ‘immanent turn’ in Protestant spirituality that has been ongoing since the 1970s. By adopting a bottom-up, lived religion perspective, the study challenges conventional top-down theological frameworks. It shows that when the focus shifts to laypeople’s everyday practices in local parishes, Lutheran Christian practice is revealed to be more flexible, inclusive, and deeply connected with embodied experiential spirituality. This approach encourages a rethinking of how Lutheran Protestantism is conceptualized, highlighting the importance of personal bodily centred experiences in the pursuit of engagement in the world and the ongoing evolution of church practice in contemporary society. Drawing on Brunswik’s Lens Model (1956), we investigated the role of students’ expression of nonverbal behavioral cues (e.g., friendly facial expression) and physical appearance (e.g., wearing eyeglasses) and how this information is utilized during the judgment process by pre-service teachers and psychology students (N = 102). Perceivers provided ratings of students’ (N = 45) academic self-concept, intelligence and motivation in brief nonverbal video clips showing one student each in a physics classroom. Numerous behavioral and physical cues (in total 165) were extracted from the stimulus material by two independent raters. Perceivers achieved highest accuracy for students’ motivation, whereas intelligence was judged with the lowest accuracy. Lens model parameter analysis indicated that perceivers strongly relied on students’ sex, an attentive and self-assured facial expression, and whether or not a student was wearing eyeglasses in their judgments. Cues that were actually related to students’ characteristics, on the other hand, involved students’ sex, a masculine and distinctive appearance, and a tensed as well as friendly facial expression. An overall favorable judgment for boys points into the direction of a gender bias. Implications for our understanding of teacher judgment processes and outcomes are discussed. Aiming at comparisons between the different Nordic countries, the chapters identify possible unique characteristics of Nordic Buddhism. Buddhism in the Nordic Countries contributes to the growing literature on Buddhism in the West. Identifying a number of similar cultural and social trends that have been at work in the Nordic countries, the book shows that these have favoured the growth of Buddhism in northern Europe. The chapters on each of the Nordic countries describe the establishment of the main Buddhist traditions in the country, temple institutions, monasteries, demography, estimation on the number of Buddhists, geography, economy and funding. They discuss tensions between ethnic Buddhist and converts, if any, and controlling mechanisms of who is a proper Buddhist and how Buddhism should be presented in public space, about societal tensions. The contributors analyse representation in media and images of Buddhism in popular culture and present relevant scholarly interest in Buddhism. Additionally, the book includes chapters on significant Buddhist individuals in the Nordic countries who have played major roles in the development of Buddhism. Significance refers to the knowledge and procedures that are related to the historian´s discipline and important for understanding a historical phenomenon. Relevance refers to historical events and processes that people perceive as relevant to understand the present world. The American Inquiry Design Model, which centers on a compelling question, can combine a qualifying dimension of significance with a contemporary dimension of relevance, to qualify students’ historical thinking in combination with a student life-world perspective. Three approaches to the recontextualisation of knowledge in the curricula were employed. First, a comparative analysis of the aims of the three curricula was carried out using a simple binary contrast between history for its own sake and history for other purposes. Second, the curricula were re-examined by drawing on the articulation of history-education-specific aims, using a range of concepts organized into eight categories. Third, a three-term articulation of educational goals, namely qualification, socialisation, and subjectification, was applied to the curricula. Following the analyses of curricular aims, a comparative analysis of curriculum content is presented. The results show that while there were similarities regarding the curricular aims, there were also clear differences between the documents. The Swedish curriculum adopts a multifaceted approach with an emphasis on historical consciousness. The English document conveys a coherent national narrative, while simultaneously engaging in historical inquiry. The Finnish aims focus on interpreting history and apprenticing towards active citizenship. The findings also suggest that history may not have an entirely weak grammar. Finally, the results are discussed in terms of powerful knowledge and its 'power to' aspect. ER - TY - CHAP T1 - Conclusion A1 - Borup, Jørn A1 - Härkönen, Mitra A1 - Jacobsen, Knut A. A scoping review of literature reviews was done. Results show that contextual conditionsare not systematically reported in literature, and are often mentioned implicitly rather than explicitly. Relevant contextual conditions for physicalmitigation measures include: climate and prominent wind patterns; water availability; soil perviousness; the population´s thermal comfort andtolerance; site geometry; surrounding surfaces; space availability and site adaptability; budget; maintenance; information availability; proximityto the sea; site function; and sun path; risks or co-occurring societal challenges; social norms, cultural values and aesthetics. Contextual conditionsfor which commonalities were found between Nordic cities allowed for the creation of an overview of considerations for transferability ofmeasures to this region, which should inform design criteria for future planning. Knowing what contextual conditions are relevant to heatmitigation measures can guide the analysis of transferability of measures in the future, and clusters of cities with similar contexts can be made, between which the transferability of solutions would be high.   ER - TY - JOUR T1 - Covering the news to develop students’ understanding of political responsibility in social studies classrooms? Purpose: The article discusses to what extent and in what ways teachers make room for students to develop their understanding of political responsibility when covering the news in social studies classrooms. The goal is to outline the conditions for a model that generates an understanding of political responsibility through news coverage. Design/methodology/approach: Six teachers’ news coverage during 25 lessons has been observed, three at lower secondary-and three at upper secondary school and analysed using content analysis, combining political-, media-and pedagogic concepts relevant for the purpose. Findings: Students’ ability to develop an understanding of political responsibility is limited. There are various needs to consider when designing a didactic model to address this problem. One concerns teachers’ readiness to perceive the political implications of news events related to political responsibility. Research limitations/implications: Although the robustness of the results increases when compared to previous research, it cannot be generalised. Practical implications: We have identified certain conditions that challenge conventional news coverage that should be considered when aiming to develop an understanding of political responsibility.  ER - TY - JOUR T1 - Critical Knowledge Interventions-Relevance Beyond Foundations T2 - Cultural Studies - Critical Methodologies SN - 1532-7086 A1 - Mitander, Tomas PY - 2025 DO - 10.1177/15327086251369554 LA - eng PB - Sage Publications KW - anti-essentialism KW - intervention KW - discourse theory KW - governmentality KW - assemblage thinking UR - 1995164 L2 - https://kau.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:1995164/FULLTEXT01.pdf AB - This article develops the concept of Critical Knowledge Interventions (CKIs) as a framework for understanding how anti-essentialist research enacts relevance-not by aligning with external standards, but by intervening in regimes of intelligibility. CKIs consist of three interrelated components: undoing dominant knowledges, redoing alternatives, and a normative driver (epistemic, ethical, political, or emancipatory). Drawing on Discourse Theory, Governmentality Studies, and Assemblage Thinking, the article illustrates how interventions differ in form, force, and orientation. CKI provides scholars with a vocabulary for analyzing and designing critical research as situated epistemic practice, foregrounding relevance as something enacted rather than assumed. Epoch-typical issues include economic and environmental justice associated with climate change. The circumstances we describe are exacerbated, we suggest, by the broader social, cultural and political contexts and divisions stoked by post-truth politics and social media. We argue that this age of crisis calls for a positive, coherent and principled educational response such as that exemplified by the capabilities approach to school geography. In recent years, conceptual and practical work emerging from GeoCapabilities has strengthened our conviction that 'Future 3' curriculum making has the potential to empower students through its engagement with geography. Teachers should be supported to acquire agency in the knowledge work necessary to achieve the full educational value of geography in education. This study aims to assess the meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological drought risk in Sweden, with a focus on hazard assessment using a set of indicators, including the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), Standardized Soil Moisture Index (SSMI), and Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI). The indicators were computed at time scales of 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months using daily precipitation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and streamflow simulations (1975-2021) from the national S-HYPE hydrological model at about 13 km2 spatial resolution for almost 40 000 sub-catchments. Dry periods were next identified and characterized based on their intensity, duration, and frequency, following this a trend analysis was performed for these indicators and periods. Assessing the spatial similarities in soil moisture anomaly led to the categorization of the Swedish river systems into five clusters further improving the understanding of the identified spatial variability of drought indicators and trends. Our findings showed drier conditions and an increasing frequency of dry periods in central- and south-eastern Sweden. Significant negative trends in these regions, along with increasingly wet conditions in northern and western Sweden, were observed when analysed using the SPEI, SSMI, and SSI. Based solely on precipitation (SPI), similar significant wetter conditions were observed in northern and western Sweden; however, no significant decreasing precipitation trends were found in parts of central-eastern Sweden and Gotland Island. The findings of this study can improve climate services and early warning systems of droughts, better understanding the link to sectoral impacts and guiding mitigation practices and adaptation policies. Crashes occurring between the years 2012 and 2022 and with cars from model years 2012 to 2022 were included in the dataset. Two statistical analyses were performed. To evaluate the crash reduction effect of AEB, odds ratio calculations with an induced exposure approach was conducted where the outcomes of sensitive and non-sensitive crashes were studied. The sensitive crashes were hit pedestrians and bicyclists, respectively. The non-sensitive crash type in both comparisons was struck vehicles in rear-end crashes. The collision reducing effect was analysed for various speed limits, lighting and visibility conditions. To evaluate whether AEB has a reducing effect on injury severity, relative differences in injury outcomes (both proportion of MAIS3+ and risk of permanent impairment, RPMI) of pedestrians and bicyclist was compared for hitting cars with and without AEB.Results: A total of 2,160 pedestrian collisions and 3,374 cyclist collisions were included, and the non-sensitive crashes consisted of 5,738 vehicles. The overall reduction in crash risk was approximately 20% (±10%) for vehicles equipped with AEB with pedestrian and/or bicycle detection. When analysed by lighting conditions, reductions in crash risk of just over 20% were observed in daylight for vehicles with AEB with pedestrian and/or bicycle detection. It appears to be a reduction also in darkness, although the reductions found of approximately 20% were not statistically significant. Reductions were observed for various weather conditions, except for cyclist crashes during rain, fog, and snowfall. A greater reduction in crash risk was noted on high-speed roads (60–120 km/h) for vehicles equipped with AEB for bicycle detection compared to low-speed roads (10–50 km/h). No similar difference was observed for AEB with pedestrian detection. Additionally, there was a greater reduction in crashes at intersections for vehicles with AEB for pedestrian detection and on roads for vehicles with AEB for bicycle detection. No difference in injury severity, both regarding proportion of MAIS3+ and RPMI, for both pedestrians and bicyclists was observed between collisions involving vehicles with and without AEB.Conclusions: This study confirms the significant potential of AEB systems in improving road safety for pedestrians and cyclists. However, their current effectiveness is too low to provide sufficient protection at today's speed limits and their expected potential and real-world performance differ a lot, which highlights the need for improvements. The study shows varying effectiveness of AEB systems in reducing crash risks under different lighting, weather, and speed conditions. Furthermore, no injury mitigating effect could be verified for cars with AEB for pedestrians and bicyclist might indicate that either a crash was completely avoided, or the AEB system did not perform any braking. While avoiding crashes could be the prime objective for an AEB for vulnerable road users, braking that reduce injury severity despite there was a crash is of importance as well. Conventional interventions have shown limited success in addressing these multifaceted issues, promptingresearchers to explore alternative solutions. Yoga Nidra (YN), a meditative practice, has gained momentum over the past decade asa potential holistic approach to mental health care. Yet, its clinical effectiveness remains inadequately understood. This systematicreview and meta-analysis rigorously assessed YN’s impact on stress, anxiety, and depression. A comprehensive search of sevendatabases and one trial database yielded 814 articles, of which 73 studies involving 5201 participants met the inclusion criteria.Between-group meta-analyses revealed significant benefits of YN for stress (Hedge’s g: −0.80 with active comparator, −1.70 withno comparator), anxiety (active: −1.35, no comparator: −1.43), and depression (active: −0.69, no comparator: −0.92). Withingroup analyses supported these effects, reinforcing YN’s therapeutic potential. However, given the low methodological qualityand variability in intervention delivery, these moderate-to-large effects should be interpreted cautiously, as they likely reflectinflated estimates. Despite these limitations, YN shows potential in managing mental health symptoms, underscoring the needfor high-quality, standardized research to establish its efficacy as a viable clinical intervention. The tolerance and wilful welcoming of these once-shunned ideologies challenge the weakened modern liberal order and signify its limitations as modernity’s symbolic authority. This phenomenon involves an unprecedented ontology in which far-right fantasies of “stolen” ethnocultural wholeness and supremacy propagate through social media governed by anti-democratic, neoliberal imperatives of attention hoarding. Fantasies of self-continuity amidst “permanent crises” – ontological security – are diffused via social media, whose algorithmic governance of our everyday shapes our identities and experience of the political. This problem points to the pressing need to explore the psycho-political and techno-mediatic dimensions of far-right normalisation. This thesis provides a novel perspective by mobilising Lacanian ontological security to investigate the role of these dimensions in normalising the far-right. First, examining the link between White supremacy and deglobalisation discourses, I find that these pushbacks against liberal democracy become affectively influential in justifying violence against essentialised others. Second, social and traditional media enable the emotional governance of far-right actors, generating feelings of ontological (in)security that position them as legitimate interlocutors. Third, I examine how mainstream right-wing politicians partake in transgressive enjoyment with the far-right against “threatening” others. I find that far-right normalisation is inextricable from the reformation of identities, in which previously held liberal beliefs recede due to the anxiety of becoming politically undesired. Finally, I analyse far-right normalisation as a fantasy of ontological security produced by social media. I find that, in commodifying political antagonisms between liberals and the far-right, these platforms reinforce neoliberalism while gradually eroding the modern liberal order.;Over the past decade, the far-right has become normalised globally. This problem points to the pressing need to explore the psycho-political and techno-mediatic dimensions of far-right normalisation. This thesis provides a novel perspective by mobilising Lacanian ontological security to investigate the role of these dimensions in normalising the far-right in four levels. It analyses the role of White supremacy and deglobalisation in shaping othering fantasies; traditional and social media’s roles in conveying far-right actors as legitimate interlocutors; the mainstream right-wing’s enjoyment of far-right fantasies; and the algorithmic governance of far-right normalisation as a fantasy reinforcing neoliberalism and eroding liberal democracy.;Under det senaste decenniet har högerextremismen ökat och normaliserats i den så kallade västliga hemisfären och i andra delar av världen. Data were drawn from Statistics Sweden's satisfaction index, rescue service response times from KOLADA, and survey data from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency on ownership of functional smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Previous research has emphasised trust and confidence as important aspects of risk management, where satisfaction reflects confidence in governance and public services. In Sweden, confidence in public actors is high, yet individuals are increasingly expected to take responsibility for their own safety. Using Statistics Sweden's satisfaction index to measure satisfaction with rescue service, regression analysis controlled for sociodemographic variables, followed by moderation analysis comparing municipalities with full-time or part-time staffed rescue services. Part-time rescue services have, on average, slower response times than full-time services. Survey data on functional smoke detectors and fire extinguisher ownership were used to explore the probability distribution of owning fire safety equipment in relation to the staffing solutions of rescue services. Findings show that longer responses decrease satisfaction in municipalities with full-time staffed rescue services, while response times do not influence satisfaction in municipalities with part-time rescue services, suggesting that expectations differ from those in municipalities with full-time rescue services. However, municipalities with part-time rescue services display higher ownership of fire safety equipment, suggesting compensatory behaviour for slower response times. The study highlights the need for further research on the relationship between satisfaction and responsibility for fire safety.  ER - TY - CHAP T1 - Feminist Activist Comics A1 - Wallin Wictorin, Margareta A1 - Nordenstam, Anna PY - 2025 SP - 207 EP - 217 DO - 10.1515/9783110775754-026 LA - eng PB - Walter de Gruyter KW - comics KW - activism KW - feminisms KW - sweden KW - tecknade serier KW - feminism KW - aktivism KW - sverige UR - 2001785 L2 - https://kau.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:2001785/FULLTEXT01.pdf AB - As this chapter has shown, feminist comics can themselves be activist, which isdemonstrated by Sara Granér’s single-panel comic about the acute climate crisisand the use of a specific sort of masculinity. This study examines textbooks and educational films from the early 1900s to the 2020s, alongside interviews with students in connection with a visit to a cultural heritage site in the 2020s. The aim is to highlight the knowledge and perspectives on prehistoric times made available to students in textbooks, educational films, and at a visit to a reconstructed Bronze Age farm and rock carving site. Additionally, the study aims to draw attention to the continuity as well as the changes in our understanding of prehistoric times as reflected in educational resources over time. The empirical material is compared with contemporary archaeological research, and the results are related to different dimensions of historical culture. Special interest is directed toward how relationships and the division of labour between women, men, and children have been depicted in textbooks and educational films. The visit to the cultural heritage site is related to historical empathy. The results show that the content of textbooks and educational films often aligns with contemporary archaeological research traditions. Women and men are, however, described primarily in traditional gender roles, and there is a need for a shorter transformation distance between researchers and producers of educational materials. In the films, the portrayal of girls undergoes the most significant change over time. The visit to the cultural heritage site highlighted the importance of students experiencing prehistory with all their senses and meeting museum educators who can convey relevant knowledge about prehistoric times. Furthermore, the results also show the importance of having time for reflection after the visit, as this facilitates students' deepened reflections. This literature review maps existing research on the security of supply for the food, drinking water, energy, and transport sectors in the context of climate extremes. The study examines how climate-related extreme weather impacts these supply systems, what scientific models and methods have been developed and applied in previous research, and what challenges remain for future studies. This study is conducted as a scoping review based on an analysis of 140 scientific articles. The results show that supply chains in all examined sectors are vulnerable to disruptions directly or indirectly caused by extreme weather events. The study describes how climate extremes trigger such disruptions and outlines their potential short and longterm consequences. Existing interdependencies within and across multiple sectors pose a substantial challenge to the security of supply. Therefore, further research is needed on the cascading effects of climate extremes and their implications for preparedness for supply chain disruptions. As the climate continues to change, the risk for compound events – where two or more crises occur simultaneously or sequentially – is increasing. Addressing this risk requires additional research from a polycrisis perspective. Furthermore, the review highlights the importance of testing and further developing scientific models specifically adapted to Nordic contexts to generate more relevant data and knowledge for this region. The right to food is enshrined in the South African constitution, yet there is an intersection between food, gender and injustice that prevails in marginalised communities in Cape Town, which is regarded to be one of the most unequal cities in the world and facing great social vulnerability. Rapid urbanisation, climate change, intensity of droughts and flooding, land speculation and shrinking quotas for small-scale fishing put pressure on the city’s food system and reduce citizens access to nutritious food. A survey of 1 060 township households from 2011 showed that 80% of low-income households in Cape Town experience food insecurity. It is now acknowledged that COVID-19 exacerbated food insecurity, and that the city has high levels of poverty induced hunger and a lack of effective response from politicians. In the post-COVID period, and with the ongoing global crisis, food prices have escalated sharply, affecting those that are the most vulnerable. At the tail end of unjust food systems are women and children, and furthermore, women-headed households are in general more food insecure than male-headed. This paper contributes to an important issue in gender research, namely the intersection between gender justice and food security. The case study is carried out in a coastal community on the Cape Peninsula of the Western Cape, South Africa where a majority of the population experience food insecurity and frequent hunger. We explore how women in the community engage in activities that can contribute to improving food security, their motivation for taking action and for advocating for just and inclusive food systems. The study draws on a methodology of co-creation of knowledge, which is embedded in a critical feminist research tradition and that addresses the lived experiences of people in the community. It posits that gifts should be conceptualized as media, shaping the construction of Duke Johan as a ruler and virtuous prince, both in the early seventeenth century and for posterity. By analyzing the remediation of Duke Johan’s gift giving practices in primary sources such as account books, letters, testaments, and funeral sermons, this study proposes a novel approach to gift analysis. It emphasizes that all archives are media archives, suggesting implications for understanding princes not only as producers and content of media but also as media entities themselves. Kort därefter, i april 1964, tillsatte således Kungl. Their numbers increased significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries, partly due to population growth and new opportunities to earn a livelihood through various auxiliary economies. Another contributing factor was the growing inequality within rural communities. This paper investigates the role of crofters and cottagers in industrialized rural communities, specifically those associated with iron works, as well as rural communities dominated by large agricultural estates in Sweden and Norway respectively. Both iron works and agricultural estates provided opportunities for crofters and cottagers to increase their income through auxiliary economies. For instance, they engaged in diverse handicrafts such as shoemaking and carpentry, produced goods like charcoal and wood, and offered services such as transportation. During periods of growth, crofters and cottagers could potentially make substantial economic gains. However, these opportunities were heavily diminished during times of crises.Due to their subordinate status, limited or complete lack of access to various resources, and dependence on landowners, crofters and cottagers developed different strategies in response to expansion and crises within agricultural estates and iron works. These strategies often involved changes in resource utilization and auxiliary economies, encompassing social and gendered agencies. From a methodological perspective, the positionality of scholar-activists is too often misunderstood. Yet scholar-activism is a relatively common approach to generating new knowledge about hard-to-access, repressive contexts while also assisting political movements and their strategies. Feminist-informed scholarship necessitates scholar-activism because it is driven by an emancipatory purpose that demands critical reflexivity about the power of epistemology, boundaries, relationships, and the researcher’s situatedness (Ackerly and True 2020, 22). We argue that a deeper understanding of scholar-activism and lived experiences is vital for furthering knowledge and impact in the politics and gender field. In turn, this has led to an increasing inequality of mortality risk and a considerable challenge for societal actors. Decreasing economic hurdles, that is, making safety interventions cheaper, and increasing knowledge has often been the chosen strategies to reduce inequality and although some success has been shown in terms of specific risks, the overall trend is towards increased inequality. An assumption underlying the sociodemographic differences in prevention has been that individuals with low sociodemographic status have an incorrect understanding of their risk. However, several recent studies have shown that individuals with objectively high risk also perceive their risk as higher therefore raising the question of why-despite having a sound knowledge of risks-they more often refrain from risk-reducing interventions. One hypothesis is that individuals with low sociodemographic status (correctly) experience that they have a higher risk in relation to many different hazards. Given the greater number of risks needing to be handled, these individuals need to prioritise which risks to focus upon, thereby not necessarily prioritising the risks that society would like them to prioritise. Using a large dataset on the self-reported perception of a large number of different risks, the differences between sociodemographic groups are analysed to investigate whether an underlying issue in the inequality of risk is that lower sociodemographic status groups perceive more risks as greater than those of higher sociodemographic status. It does not merely solve problems – it co-creates them, shapes them, and frames them. This doctoral thesis investigates the role of technology as a counterpart to protesters within authoritarian regimes, focusing on its active integration into political dissent. By examining two empirical cases – the incorporation of Telegram and TikTok into the Belarusian protests of summer 2020 and the Russian protests in January 2021 – the thesis explores how digital platforms are drawn into protests through socio-technical networks co-mediated by humans and technology. To conceptualise this entanglement, the thesis introduces the metaphor of the machinery of dissent: a network in which protestors, coordinators, technologies, and infrastructures function as interconnected cogs and gears. Within this machinery, technology operates not as an external facilitator, but as a constitutive force – a gearwheel that shapes the rhythm and direction of dissent itself.By tracing the functioning of the sociotechnical network and agencies involved, this thesis offers both an empirical investigation and a conceptual framework for understanding how technology becomes part of political struggle within autocratic regimes.;Teknik är inte längre ett passivt verktyg som kan plockas upp och läggas åt sidan; den har blivit en integrerad del av den politiska väven i samtida samhällen. Genom att spåra det sociotekniska nätverkets funktion och de involverade aktörernas agens erbjuder avhandlingen både en empirisk analys och ett begreppsligt ramverk för att förstå hur tekniken blir en del av den politiska kampen i auktoritära regimer.;Technology is no longer a passive tool to be picked up and set aside; it has become an integral part of the political fabric of contemporary societies. By examining two empirical cases – the incorporation of Telegram and TikTok into the Belarusian protests of summer 2020 and the Russian protests in January 2021 – the thesis explores how digital platforms are drawn into protests through socio-technical networks co-mediated by humans and technology. The empirical material includes a dataset of protest-related content on TikTok and Telegram, as well as 38 interviews with protest participants, protest leaders, and digital activists.Building on this material, the thesis first proposes an updated framework for analysing the mobilisation and coordination of technology-mediated political protests. It further explores protest-related agencies of people and technology and conceptualises protest organisation as labour, often unseen and perceived as performed solely by technologies. Finally, by engaging with social movement theories and science and technology studies, the thesis offers the concept of digital town squares and argues that recognising digital spaces as legitimate sites of political struggle enables a deeper understanding of how movements are organised and sustained. The metaphor of the ‘machinery of dissent’ illustrates a network in which protesters, coordinators, technologies, and infrastructures function as interconnected cogs and gears. Instead, a consensus-oriented “democratic nationalism” was nurtured by almost all social and political forces in the 1930: s (Kayser Nielsen, 2009). During postwar period this development was for long supplemented with internationalism, as seen in a strong support of the UN- system. The political concord was also strengthened by the emergence of a broad welfare system. After the end of cold war an increasing globalising process – including many immigrants – gave place for an idea of a multicultural, universalist society (Hylland Eriksen, 2014). Despite this very broadly sketched picture, there was a slow but distinct rise of neo-nationalistic political parties from the 1960: s and onwards. In the first two decades of the 21st century these parties eventually broke the cordon sanitaire and got real political influence (Bergmann, 2020). All this has an increasing impact on schools in the Nordic countries where the curricula still contain several goals that mirrors the long history of democratic nationalism, internationalism and universalism. That is specifically the case for the syllabuses in social studies and history. This development is likely to be an arena for political struggle in the years to come. It also includes challenges from students with right-wing, racist attitudes that teachers in an everyday setting must handle in their classrooms (Mattson et al, 2024). In my part of the symposium, I will discuss this problem with some examples from previous research (Olofsson, 2024). I will also briefly present NDFN (Nasjonalisme, Demokrati og Fellesskap i Norden [Nationalism, Democracy and Coherence in Nordic region]). To prevent such injuries, many Swedish municipalities have implemented programs that distribute ice cleats, typically restricted to adults aged >= 65. Evidence suggests these programs increase cleat use, reduce injuries, and are cost-effective. However, it remains unclear whether restricting distribution to older adults is more effective than broader or universal strategies. This study is the first to formally evaluate this question. MethodsWe developed a cohort simulation model combining elements of the local average treatment effects framework and the health belief model to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of alternative ice cleat distribution strategies across age thresholds. The model incorporates age-specific injury risks, compliance, costs, and quality-adjusted life year losses, using input from behavioral surveys, register data on ice-related fall injuries, and published literature. It is calibrated to outcomes from real-world distribution programs. Cost-effectiveness was assessed from a societal perspective, defining optimal thresholds as those maximizing net monetary benefit and acceptable thresholds as those with > 50% probability of being cost-effective compared to no distribution in probabilistic sensitivity analyses. ResultsOur primary analysis identified >= 55 years as the optimal eligibility threshold (acceptable range: 42-72). Sensitivity analyses indicated that universal distribution may be acceptable if cleats are purchased restrictively and targeted to non-users, but it is unlikely to be optimal. When assuming short-lived behavior change (<= 2 years) or valuing costs from a healthcare perspective only, no distribution was preferable. ConclusionAge-targeted ice cleat distribution appears more cost-effective than universal provision and preferable to no distribution, but current programs limited to older adults may be suboptimal. Extending eligibility to middle-aged adults could further improve cost-effectiveness from a societal perspective. Despite advancements in road safety, pedestrians remain a vulnerable group, with road traffic injuries and fatalities disproportionately affecting them. This thesis investigates pedestrian accidents in Sweden, focusing on epidemiological patterns and the effectiveness of selected interventions for safety. It compiles four papers analysing Swedish traffic accident data: Paper I compares pedestrian single- and collision-related accidents and injuries to other road users; Paper II examines reversing collisions involving pedestrians; Paper III evaluates the effectiveness of Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems in reducing pedestrian accidents; and Paper IV assesses the impact of heated walking surfaces in preventing fall-related injuries in urban areas.Using Swedish Traffic Accident Data and technical data on driver support systems and heated paths, the studies apply various statistical methods and induced exposure techniques to evaluate interventions. The results reveal that pedestrians represent a significant proportion of traffic injuries, with elderly and female pedestrians particularly vulnerable to fall-related injuries in urban settings. Reversing accidents were shown to account for 12% of pedestrian collisions, with clusters highlighting specific risk groups. AEB systems were found to reduce accident risk by 20%, although their effectiveness varied by conditions. Heated surfaces proved effective in reducing fall-related injuries by up to 100%.This thesis concludes that to tackle pedestrian safety effectively, improved and more inclusive statistics are required, alongside targeted interventions. By doing so, better pedestrian safety can be achieved as well as increasing the potential to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and improved public health.;Walking is an eco-friendly and healthy transport mode, but pedestrians face significant risks, especially in adverse weather. Dogwhistles are ambiguous political messages that convey a veiled meaning to a targeted subset of the audience but are inaudible to others. They present challenges from the standpoint of democratic representation and the principles of open and informed deliberation. We use survey data from a two-wave panel word replacement test, in which respondents were asked to replace a word or multiple words in a sentence so that the meaning of the sentence remained about the same. Manual coding was used to separate dogwhistle payload replacement words from replacement words with the explicit meaning. Comparing the replacement test in the two waves and between groups, we chart the life cycle of dogwhistles and explore group differences in the ability to decode their implicit payload. We find examples of both dogwhistle semantic stability and change. The analysis demonstrated an increase in the share of respondents who inferred 'good order in migration policy' as meaning stricter migration policy between the two waves. The likelihood of decoding the implicit dogwhistle message was linked to individual-level factors, such as age, party affiliation, social media and radical right-wing media use. By exploring semantic change using a novel approach, this paper leaves a unique contribution to the study of strategic ambiguity in political communication. However, the changing media environment and a rise of misinformation have raised new questions about how citizens acquire and retain political knowledge, prompting distinctions between the uninformed and those holding directional or evidence-resistant misbeliefs. We extend this discussion by arguing that even individuals who are factually accurate may not necessarily be politically knowledgeable, as directional beliefs can sometimes coincide with correct information. We address this both theoretically-by integrating concepts of certainty and attitudes toward evidence-and empirically, by analyzing belief patterns across political issues using Swedish survey data (N = 2,268). Our findings suggest that individuals can be knowledgeable on some issues yet holding directional (mis)beliefs on others, selectively aligning with facts that support their views. These belief patterns are not associated with traditional news use but correlate with alternative news consumption. These questions are asked through this study of curriculum contexts in England, Sweden and Finland. The three iterations of the subject are similar enough to compare—yet different enough for the character of each to emerge when they are juxtaposed and ‘mirrored’ in each other. This comparative approach allows us to explore what kinds of powers RE, represented in written curricula, aims to foster in each context. This is simultaneously an exploration of the nature and raison d’etre of RE as a school subject. The purpose of RE is examined via analysing lower secondary curriculum documents with the theoretical lens of powerful knowledge. Overall, the curricula focus mostly on providing information about religions and worldviews. However, this knowledge is used for developing powers that were identified as having different emphasis in each context. The Finnish curriculum emphasizes students’ personal and ethical development, the English curriculum has the strongest weight on academic knowledge and the Swedish curriculum concentrates on developing students’ intercultural competence and understanding of societies. The example discussed is a field trip to Vitlycke, a heritage and rock carving site with an associated reconstructed Bronze Age farm, where pupils had the opportunity to experience prehistory with all their senses. The study is based on the idea that historical empathy is a process that involves both cognitive and affective dimensions and that both dimensions are important for progress. The pupils were interviewed after the trip and their responses are related to the concepts of perspective recognition and care. The study shows how the cognitive and affective dimensions were interwoven in the pupils' reasoning and how the field trip contributed to an emotional and personal connection necessary for the development of historical empathy. This engagement led to a broadening and deepening of the pupils' cognitive understanding of Bronze Age life and living conditions, while the cognitive understanding of the historical context contributed to a framework in which they could use their imagination. The results also show the importance of giving pupils time to follow up on their experiences after visiting a heritage site. In Scandinavia, local civil society organizations have long been overlooked as key partners in creating public value together with municipalities. Since 2010, Sweden has been experimenting with collaborative co-creation models that involve both municipal and third sector service providers. This article explores the specifics and reception of such models in rural areas of Finland and identifies the key lessons learned. It delves into the impact of legal frameworks and entrenched public sector norms on the success of these initiatives. The aim is to enhance the understanding of the prerequisites for applying this model among public and civil society actors. The article explores the spread of an innovative model for state-third sector partnerships used in Sweden among local governments in Finland. The study employed action-based research to generate and analyse data from four self-selected municipalities. The study reveals major facilitators and obstacles in spreading and adopting collaborative cross-sector models as they go beyond simple methodological or legal issues and require a shift in public sector logics and identities. The results suggest that resistance is more 'in the heads' of municipal managers and politicians and engrained in administrative traditions than in legal paragraphs or financial shortages. By adopting a life history approach and taking an ecological perspective on reading that links narratives of reading experiences to places, times, and historical changes, the paper addresses how rural males’ reading practices intersect with ways of living in Swedish rural woodlands, and in what ways they have been maintained and changed across generations. Findings show that the males engage in practical performative reading practices where reading is transformed into embodied activities in which knowledge practices and embodied skills, entangled with socio-material and historical cultures, are constructed and reconstructed through intergenerational repetitions. This post-doctoral project has designed and classroom-tested a didactic model that starts from pupils’ own ritualised everyday practices and prepares them for informed participation in a multireligious democracy. The model integrates insights from research on lived religion, religious literacy and aesthetic education (Enstedt & Plank, 2018b; Hilger et al., 2010; Jahnke, 2023; McGuire, 2008; Moore, 2007). Comparative ethnography in India (Niemi, 2020) both highlights the Lutheran bias shaping Swedish RE and contributes strategies that expose learners to embodied ritual diversity, allowing them to practise conscious engagement.Research circles with teachers at two upper-secondary schools have refined the model through iterative classroom trials, yielding preliminary data. The resulting framework offers practical tools for worldview literacy, critical reflexivity and civic responsibility. This paper presents the model, its theoretical foundations and initial empirical insights. Reversing accidents, characterized by vehicles moving backward, often result in severe consequences for pedestrians due to limited visibility and inherent blind spots for the driver. This paper aims to provide a thorough examination of reversing accidents involving pedestrians in Sweden between 2000-2021; shedding light on the magnitude of the problem, contributing factors, consequences, and potential mitigation strategies.MethodUsing a national database, reversing accidents were compiled by classifying free text descriptions of traffic accidents reported to the Swedish Traffic Accident Data Acquisition. The database was then used to describe reversing accidents and their consequences for struck pedestrians using descriptive epidemiology and cluster analysis.ResultsThe results show that reversing accidents accounted for 12% of all pedestrians injured in a collision with a motor vehicle in Sweden during the studied period. In terms of personal characteristics, the struck pedestrians were more often female and of old or young age, whilst the drivers of the reversing vehicles were more often between 18-54 years and men. Most accidents were non-fatal, with only roughly 2% resulting in fatalities. Through a cluster analysis, four distinct accident types were identified. Two of these were identified as particularly important to prioritize in future preventative work: accidents that are characterized by occur during daylight hours in the urban environment (often low speeds) and often result in fatality or serious injury.ConclusionsDue to the low speeds, reversing accidents are rarely fatal. However, they account for a large proportion of accidents with pedestrians and can be grouped into clearly distinguishable accident types that can function as templates in road safety development in Sweden. This study examines the redevelopmentof Rushikonda Hill, an ecologically sensitive coastal site in Andhra Pradesh, India,to quantify land alteration and evaluate governance implications. High-resolutionPlanet Scope imagery and historical Google Earth Pro basemaps from 2021 to 2023were analysed through visual interpretation and manual digitization. The approvedproject footprint was 9.88 acres, yet satellite analysis indicated that by late 2023approximately 19.1 acres had been visibly altered; nearly double the sanctionedextent. Alteration progressed in distinct phases: initial vegetation clearance, slopeterracing and excavation, large-scale levelling, and visible building foundation work.Artificial green mats were later placed on exposed slopes, creating an appearanceof regrowth without evidence of ecological restoration. These findings point tostructural gaps in India’s post-clearance compliance system: limited independentaudits, reliance on self-reporting, and conflicts of interest in state-led projects. Basedon the Rushikonda case and comparable examples, three policy pathways areproposed: integrating satellite audits into compliance, legally recognizing remotesensing as admissible evidence, and expanding public-access monitoring platforms. The approach demonstrated here offers a transferable framework for using satelliteimagery to detect regulatory non-compliance, strengthening environmentalaccountability in similar governance settings worldwide. Data were collected through interviews with teachers and groups of students, classroom observations, group discussions during lessons, teaching materials, and student materials. Data analysis was aided by the theories of historiebruk, historical culture, the narrative competence, and didactic contract. To that end, it conducts a case study of representations of the Kurds in Turkish scholarship and aims to highlight a nexus between nationalism, state policy, and scholarship. Two arguments are advanced herein. First, Turkish scholars who adhere to the dominant nationalist ideology in Turkey represent the Kurds in accordance with the dictates of this ideology and justify sovereign power in the maintenance of relations of ethnic domination and subordination. Second, while Turkey no longer denies the physical existence of the Kurds, the state and Turkish scholars persist in withholding recognition of Kurdish identity. The scholars in question do so under pretenses of scientific objectivity, political universalism, and a commitment to peace. However, the lingering of the policy of denial and the justification of it constitute a fundamental hurdle to a peaceful resolution of the Kurdish issue. A critical approach to state policy and scholarship not only makes it possible to debunk pretenses of scientific objectivity and political universalism, but may also be more conducive to scholarly autonomy and commitment to peace in societies marked by ethnic conflict.  ER - TY - CONF T1 - The local struggle for survival : Municipalities and jobs in the age of deindustrialisation A1 - Backius, Stefan A1 - Melin, Åsa PY - 2025 LA - eng UR - 1958636 AB - Following the steel crisis of the 1970s, many Swedish industrial communities underwent major transformations in the 1980s and 1990s. The restructuring of the steel industry led to significant deindustrialisation in the industrial communities of central Sweden. For communities heavily dependent on large industrial enterprises, deindustrialisation posed fundamental economic and social challenges for local communities and their residents. These challenges also led to a redefinition of the towns identities as iron and steel towns, with stable, dominant companies and secure, lifelong jobs for generations of men. In these redefinitions, the old masculinities were less viable. The emerging local labour and economic policies of the 1980s and 1990s became crucial to the survival of the community. Although this area of intervention became the concern of all affected municipalities, the strategies and directions of action took different paths. This presentation will explore how some mill towns (bruksorter) in the formerly thriving industrial belt of Bergslagen have dealt with the sudden and challenging closures or downsizing of factories, with impoverishment, unemployment and out-migration as scenarios to be avoided or at least managed. The far right has increasingly accessed the political ‘mainstream’ through the enabling of erstwhile-disavowing centre-right and right-wing counterparts. In contexts of political ‘victory’, the identity (re)formation of these mainstream right-wing subjects and discourses can be observed and analysed through celebrations alongside the far right and in emotions and attitudes like elation, gloating, and self-righteousness. In this article, I address how victory-related manifestations of enjoyment – or jouissance – are articulated in the discourses of mainstream right-wing subjects. I ask what enjoyment-based rhetoric reveal about the normalisation of the far right and the identity reformation of right-wing subjects and discourses. To address this, I first discuss the role of enjoyment on far-right normalisation by merging Derk Hook’s analytics of enjoyment (2017) with ontological security, expanding on the latter concept as a libidinal fantasy of ideological closure. Subsequently, analysing the case of the 2022 Swedish election, I explore three interrelated dimensions of co-(re)formation of right-wing enjoyment, discourses, and identities: the symbolic space where civilisational-securitising fantasies are produced; the threatening modes of enjoyment of cultural Others; and the imperilled enjoyment modes of the ‘real Swedes’. This article applies previous research within social movements and democratization studies about the use of Facebook and Twitter to instigate and galvanize protests in autocratic countries in order to explore how protest mobilization on newly politicized platforms such as Telegram and TikTok is manifested. For this purpose, we conducted a qualitative content analysis of 1,128 protest-related publications (posts) on Telegram’s channel NextaLive and 100 videos on TikTok. The conclusion provides an extended framework for analyzing political mobilization online and argues that social networking platforms can themselves be considered spaces that are commensurate with those of offline protest and not merely tools to stimulate democratic participation. Ancient and cultural remains are at great risk of damage in today’s mechanized forestry. Evaluations have shown that a total of 27% of all known ancient remains were damaged in connection with regeneration felling in 2023. The same evaluation also showed that ancient remains with visible markings, especially in the form of cultural stumps, were less likely to be damaged. For the system of cultural stumps to be an effective protection for ancient and cultural remains in forestry, it is necessary that they are correctly placed, and that the degree of marking is complete. This, in turn, requires a good knowledge base in the form of high-density inventories, and archaeological competence to guide the work of ”setting out” cultural stumps. While satellite remote sensing provides strong temporal coverage, conventional approaches for mapping the built environment often rely on very high-resolution imagery or LiDAR, which lack consistent temporal availability and are costly to scale especially for capturing vertical growth. This study leverages Google’s Open Buildings 2.5D Temporal Dataset (2016-2023), which offers annual estimates of building presence, count, and height, to detect structural change in Nairobi, Kenya. By analysing differences in building count and average height across 100-meter grid cells, we developed a rule-based framework to identify four key transformation types: vertical densification, horizontal densification, combined densification (increase in both count and height), and decline. To our knowledge, this is the first study to use this dataset to assess vertical change within informal settlements. Validation was conducted through a two-source approach using historical satellite imagery (Google Earth Pro) and archival street-level imagery (Google Street View). A total of 154 grid cells across 13 slum areas were manually assessed, yielding an overall accuracy of 96.75%. Horizontal and combined densification showed perfect agreement, while vertical densification and decline categories had over 80% accuracy. Spatial analysis across slums, adjacent buffer areas, and the broader city revealed horizontal densification as the dominant trend within informal settlements, while vertical and combined growth were more prominent in surrounding zones. These results demonstrate the potential of Google’s 2.5D dataset for scalable, interpretable urban monitoring in rapidly changing environments. While the focus has long been on the energy sector, other carbon-intensive industries also have to contribute to reduced emissions. The steel industry is one of these. In Sweden there are various changes on the way to reduce the climate impact of the steel industry. From fossil free steel making to a greater use of alternative materials to replace the use of steel, such as timber in construction. These changes will have widespread socio-economic implications, within the industry (for example, the number of workers and types of skills required) but also outside it. Places where the steel industry is based often have close social and economic ties with the industry. In this project we ask: What will happen to these places when industrial activities move or change? But also: Can such changes be channeled into something positive? How can industrial change help communities to thrive in low-carbon economies of the future? We will answer these questions through a combination of historical and contemporary case studies in Sweden and the United Kingdom. Yoga Nidra (YGN), a guided meditative practice focused on relaxation, has gained attention for its potential cardiovascular effects. Despite this, a clear understanding of YGN’s efficacy remains limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the effects of YGN on various cardiovascular parameters.MethodsA comprehensive literature search was conducted across seven academic databases including PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest, as well as one trial register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool for randomized trials and the Downs and Black checklist for non-randomized studies.ResultsA comprehensive literature search across seven databases identified 620 articles, of which 28 met the inclusion criteria for analysis. The quality assessment revealed that most included studies had methodological limitations. The between-group meta-analysis demonstrated significant small-to-large effect improvements in systolic blood pressure (Hedges’ g: -1.65), diastolic blood pressure (-1.01), heart rate (-0.73), and heart rate variability parameters such as low to high frequency ratio (-0.35), when YGN was compared to active control groups. These findings were supported by within-group analyses and leave-one-out sensitivity tests.ConclusionThe results indicate that YGN practice was associated with improvements in cardiovascular health markers across the analyzed studies. However, the methodological limitations identified in the current literature indicates that high-quality, rigorously designed randomized controlled trials are needed to strengthen the evidence base for YGN’s effectiveness in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
